In early July 2000, I noticed an announcement on LinuxGames for a Linux port of an old DOS top scrolling shooter called Raptor from Mountain King Studios. I used to love these kinds of games back in the 80's, so I downloaded it and checked it out. Raptor was fun, but the mouse control felt sluggish and although the graphics have a nice retro feel, they look pretty chunky on a 21" monitor. So, I began to wonder how hard it would be to write a similar type of game using OpenGL. I had been wanting to experiment with SDL and OpenAL for a while, and this seemed like a good opportunity. I figured that I could knock out a quick prototype in a weekend or two just for the coding experience.
But, it turned out to be a lot of fun to work on, and the two weeks turned into two months. I'm not sure how much more work I'll put into Chromium because I want to get back to some other projects, but I'll probably make improvements from time to time.
